Scholar-in-Residence Award

Note: the NLCAHR Scholar-in-Residence award will not be offered in 2011.

NLCAHR's Scholar-in-Residence Award provides funding for a researcher to spend one or two terms at Memorial University. The visiting researcher will provide input into local research activities, help build linkages and facilitate collaboration of local researchers with external researchers and research organizations.


Program Overview
The goals of NLCAHR’s Scholar-in-Residence program are:

  • To bring to Newfoundland and Labrador established scholars from elsewhere who are actively involved in research linked to the Centre’s priority themes
  • To build linkages and facilitate collaboration of local researchers with external researchers and research organizations
  • To provide input into our ongoing research activities and research plans as well as to the work of graduate students at Memorial


The NLCAHR Scholar-in-Residence will be an academic with an excellent record of applied health research in areas such as health services, health policy, or other related areas that build on the interests of local scholars.

The Scholar-in-Residence will take residence at NLCAHR’s offices at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada for one or two terms. NLCAHR will fund one two-term visitor or up to two two-term visitors per year.

Role of the Scholar-in-Residence
During his or her tenure, the Scholar-in-Residence will:

  • Collaborate with NLCAHR-affiliated researchers
  • Give at least one lecture per term on a research topic of mutual interest to the scholar and NLCAHR’s affiliated researchers
  • Participate in seminars and meetings and in other activities of the research community
  • Be available for consultation with graduate students


Terms

  • The Scholar-in Residence will be appointed for a period of one or two terms, with no more than one scholar appointed at any time
  • The Scholar-in-Residence will receive a stipend of $15,000 CAD (in salary or research grant) for a full academic year’s residence or $7,500 for a single semester to be provided on terms approved by Memorial’s Office of Research. Office facilities and services will be provided by NLCAHR.
  • Up to $2,000 per scholar will be provided in reimbursement for travel and/or relocation expenses on submission of appropriate receipts
  • The award will be made on the basis of a written agreement specifying the obligations and rights of both the recipient and NLCAHR

  • Population health and health services challenges of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Health promotion and wellness
  • Efficiency and effectiveness of the provincial health care system


Eligibility

  • Applications are invited from scholars affiliated with Canadian universities or universities in other countries.
  • Target applicants are sabbaticants and retirees from outside of Newfoundland and Labrador but, under exceptional circumstances, retirees from Newfoundland are eligible to apply.

Scholars are invited to complete and submit the application form to NLCAHR by May 1 2009 to be considered for an appointment beginning in September 2009, September 15 2009 to be considered for an appointment beginning in January 2010.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed by the Research Advisory Committee and approved by the Board of NLCAHR. Selection will be based on

  • Quality of the academic CV plus fit with priority research themes and ongoing research activities of NLCAHR and its affiliated researchers and stakeholders
  • Collaborative experience with policy makers will be considered an asset for the purposes of this competition

Work on knowledge transfer and exchange will be valued equally with peer reviewed publications.
